Construction on the Metropolitan Saint Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of Santa Maria la Menor began in around 1514 and ended in 1541. Considered by many to be the most important colonial monument in Santo Domingo, this was the first cathedral in the Americas. Of interest; this was the original site of the Christopher Columbus mausoleum that is now situated in the Faro a Colón.
