The Botanical Gardens
Features exhibits of tropical plants, aquatic varieties and orchids endemic to the island. The Dominican Republic produces over 300 varieties of orchid! A visit to the Japanese Garden is recommended.
The National Zoo
Natural habitats have been created for animals native to the tropics as well as those brought to Zoodom from all parts of the world, including elephants, lions, tigers, zebras, and antelopes.
Los Tres Ojos
Mysterious caves leads to three lagoons that run deep and cold. There are stalagmites and stalactites in this spectacular underground setting.
The National Aquarium
Everything from Angel Fish to Sharks! The star of the aquarium is Tamaury, the manatee rescued as an orphaned baby off the coast of Barahona. It is considered one of the best of the Caribbean.
The Columbus Lighthouse
Designed by J.L. Gleave, an English architect, whose design won the international competition held in 1928. 455 plans were submitted by architects of 48 countries. The winner was announced in Rio de Janeiro in 1931. In addition to the burial chamber of Christopher Columbus, it houses documents and artifacts from colonial times. Lights of almost solar intensity light up the night sky and give shape to a cross in the clouds. |
